Finally - where are the notes on the fretboard?

If you don't read standard musical notation (which is on the bottom half of this pic), that's ok, we can use what is called tab notation. Tab is what is shown across the top of the pic. The way to read Tab is to hold your guitar and look down at the fretboard, you see six strings running across the fretbaord lengthwise right? Well these correspond to the six lines we see on the tab notation, the numbers represent the fret to be used to sound that note( a 'zero' means pluck the string with no fingers on the fretboard, a 'one' means press on the second fret on string for that note...yadda...yadda...yadda...).

tab and standard notation

If you notice we are only going up to the fifth fret for now! Remember this site is for BEGINNERS, I don't want to scare anyone away just yet.

Another thing to notice is that we are looking at all notes in the scale (chromatic), this includes sharps and flats, that's ok we can do this... Here we begin to see the pattern of W-W-H-W-W-W-H or 'one fret skipped(Whole)' and 'no fret skipped(Half)' from what we read on the theory page.

"Why only the first five frets" you may ask? Well, as beginners, we need to get our fingers to work with our guitar. The first four frets will correspond to the first four fingers of your left hand (right hand for lefties...). Meaning, fret 1 = index finger, fret 2 = middle finger, fret 3 = ring finger, fret 4 = pinky finger.

frere jacques - tab

Now let's try a simple tune with the above tab, remember take it slow for now. Let each note ring after plucking the string, try to get a feel for how much pressure you need and don't worry about timing for now. This melody will be familar to you once you get the notes flowing...
